Elise, while enjoying a peaceful moment at a café in Paris, receives a cryptic letter from her former lover, Alexander Pearce. The letter presents a plan for her to travel to Venice and indicates that she must find a man who resembles Pearce to convince the authorities.

Realizing the potential consequences of the letter, Elise quickly decides to burn it. Without hesitation, she hops on a train heading to Venice, determined to follow the instructions laid out by Pearce.
