In a provincial Russian town at the turn of the 20th century, three sisters—Irina, Masha and Natasha—long to return to their former Moscow life, which they recall as vibrant and meaningful. Their brother Andrei marries a local girl, Natasha, and settles into a dull routine. Masha, though married, seeks excitement and begins an affair with the melancholy officer Vershinin, whose wife is ill. Irina’s optimism wanes as the family faces mounting disappointment, culminating in tragedy.
