As Abbot Fahai and his loyal aide, Neng Ren, made their way to the summit of the mountain, their peaceful journey was suddenly interrupted by an astonishing encounter with a whimsical ice harpy. With a cheeky grin, this mischievous being turned Neng Ren into a stunning ice statue, compelling Fahai to seek the help of a demon trapper to undo the spell. After being freed from his crystalline prison, Neng Ren was assigned the daunting task of capturing the harpy and confining her within a magical circle at Lei Feng Pagoda, where she would join other wayward demons.

On the mountain’s opposite side, two spirited snake demons, Qingqing and Susu, were playing in the lush underbrush. Their carefree frolic was briefly interrupted when they caught sight of physician Xu Xian foraging for herbs below. The playful Qingqing couldn’t resist the opportunity to prank Xu Xian and teased him, resulting in a tumble that sent him rolling down the slope and splashing into the lake. Feeling sympathetic for the unfortunate human, Susu transformed into her human form and graced him with a gentle kiss, miraculously rejuvenating his essence. When Xu Xian regained his senses, he recounted the peculiar encounter to his friends, who found the story amusing.

Later, Fahai and Neng Ren ventured from the temple to confront a nefarious bat demon, whose last victim they had found earlier. Coincidentally, they crossed paths with Xu Xian, who offered them a boat ride to the city, blissfully unaware of the unfolding complexities in his life. As Susu pondered her fateful meeting with Xu Xian, she sought him out in the lively city environment. Meanwhile, Qingqing roamed the crowded streets, eventually discovering Neng Ren and choosing to help him by disclosing the whereabouts of the bat demon king. Despite Neng Ren’s triumph over the bat demon’s minions, he was not able to defeat their leader, which led to his brutal bite. Fortunately, Fahai intervened just in time, saving Neng Ren from becoming a bat demon himself, but he found himself succumbing to monstrous urgings the next day and fled in desperation.

As the nightlife in the city thrived, Xu Xian finally recognized the enchanting Susu, who had hidden her true serpentine identity. The pair shared an unforgettable evening together, blissfully unaware of the supernatural forces that had conspired to bring them closer. When Qingqing encountered Neng Ren once more, a surprising connection formed, highlighting that despite his transformation into a bat demon, he retained a fondness for human pleasures and many of his previous traits. In another twist, Xu Xian and Susu found joy as they wed, yet little did they know their bond was on the verge of being tested.

Fahai, ever alert to the influence of dark forces, presented Xu Xian with a mystical dagger designed to destroy even the most powerful demons. His motives were twofold; convinced that Susu might actually be a demon due to her unique capacity to heal poisons, Fahai felt compelled to protect Xu Xian from any catastrophe their union may entail. Susu’s previous efforts to save people, however, had earned her Fahai’s hesitant respect, and he advised her to part ways from Xu Xian to avoid disaster, threatening dire consequences should she refuse.

When Susu disregarded Fahai’s caution, he and his followers launched a sudden attack on Xu Xian’s home. During the chaos, Susu morphed back into her serpent form to fight back but caught Xu Xian off guard, and he struck her down, believing she was a threat. Though seriously injured, Susu managed to escape, leaving behind a trail of chaos and sorrow.

In the aftermath of their devastating confrontation, Xu Xian was engulfed with guilt and sadness, realizing the severity of his premature actions. Heartsick, he embarked on a treacherous journey to locate the mythical spirit root, hoping it would suffice to heal Susu’s injuries and mend their fractured relationship. As Xu Xian’s desperate pursuit for this sacred root came to fruition, his fleeting success was overshadowed by a demonic force that ensnared him. The monks, led by Fahai, stepped in to perform an exorcism to reclaim Xu Xian from the clutches of darkness. At the same moment, Susu awakened to find her sister Qingqing by her side. Together they ventured to save Xu Xian, but were halted by Fahai, who warned them against interrupting the critical exorcism rituals. Unfazed, Susu accused Fahai of seeking to separate her from Xu Xian, igniting a fierce conflict between the two sisters and the staunch monk.

As the battle escalated, Fahai skillfully deflected their sword strikes and unleashed a counterstrike that shattered Jinshan, averting further catastrophic harm. However, this moment of peace was fleeting, as Susu’s true form emerged, liberating Xu Xian from the demonic grasp, only for her to realize he had no memory of her. Angered by this revelation, Susu placed blame on Fahai, leading to an intense confrontation. Despite his valiant attempts to defend against Susu’s serpentine fury and keeping Qingqing at bay, Fahai ultimately found himself bested, left wondering if his unwavering resolve in the name of demon-hunting and protecting Buddhism had ultimately caused more harm than good.

As Susu continued her onslaught, Fahai summoned his faith in Buddha, manifesting numerous divine arms that deftly parried her attacks. Taking advantage of the moment, he confined Susu within Lei Feng Pagoda. Guilt-ridden, Susu pleaded to see Xu Xian one last time, and Fahai, bolstered by divine compassion, complied, lifting the pagoda to fulfill her wish. Their emotional reunion allowed Susu to share a heartbreaking farewell kiss, restoring Xu Xian’s memories just as she was drawn back into the temple’s confines. As Fahai relinquished his grip on the pagoda, this sealed Susu’s fate, leaving Xu Xian in despair. Observing this tragic ending from a distance, Qingqing confided in Neng Ren her reluctance to ever feel the depth of love her sister had for Xu Xian, leaving with a solemn warning: he will never truly be a bat demon anyway.

As the tale draws to a close, Xu Xian’s peaceful thoughts contrast sharply with the hushed silence of Susu, now trapped forever in the temple’s ancient stones in her serpentine form. Meanwhile, Fahai roams the serene mountain landscape, his footsteps breaking the stillness when suddenly, Neng Ren appears beside him, reborn as a grotesque bat demon. With a knowing smile, Fahai offers Neng Ren an apple, indicating his acceptance of their new, unsettling transformation. Together, they embark on a new journey, seamlessly weaving through a realm where the lines between human and demon are beautifully distorted, much like the fog-laden peaks surrounding them.

The dagger is specifically designed to destroy powerful demons, and Fahai hopes it will protect Xu Xian if Susu turns hostile. Q2

Why does Xu Xian strike Susu with the dagger?

A.

When Fahai and his monks attack Xu Xian's home, Susu transforms into her serpent form to fight back and protect him. However, Xu Xian sees the massive snake and, believing it is a demon threatening his household, instinctively strikes Susu with the dagger Fahai gave him. He doesn't realize the snake is actually his beloved Susu in her true form. This tragic mistake leaves Susu seriously injured and triggers Xu Xian's guilt-ridden quest to find the spirit root to heal her.

Fahai's warning about Susu being a demon planted the idea in Xu Xian's mind that supernatural beings are dangerous.

Q3

Why does Susu get trapped in Lei Feng Pagoda?

A.

After Susu's true form emerges and she attacks Fahai in anger over losing Xu Xian's memories, Fahai uses his divine Buddhist powers to confine her within Lei Feng Pagoda. This is the same prison where other wayward demons are held. The pagoda represents eternal confinement for supernatural beings who defy the natural order. Although Susu pleads to see Xu Xian one last time, and Fahai compassionately allows their final goodbye, he ultimately seals her inside, trapping her forever in her serpentine form.

Earlier, Neng Ren was assigned to capture the ice harpy and confine her within Lei Feng Pagoda, establishing it as the realm's prison for demons.

Q4

Why does Xu Xian lose his memory of Susu?

A.

During the exorcism ritual performed by Fahai and his monks, demonic forces that had captured Xu Xian are expelled from him. When Susu uses her powers to free Xu Xian from the demonic grasp, the violent spiritual cleansing apparently erases his memories of her. The trauma of the exorcism combined with the supernatural battle leaves Xu Xian unable to remember his beloved Susu, even though their love was central to his life.

The demonic forces that captured Xu Xian during his search for the spirit root were actively trying to consume his soul.

Q5

Why does Neng Ren become a bat demon?

A.

During the battle with the bat demon king, Neng Ren is bitten by the powerful demon leader. This bite transforms Neng Ren into a bat demon himself. Despite his transformation, Neng Ren retains his human personality, memories, and fondness for human pleasures. Fahai initially tries to save him but cannot reverse the curse. Interestingly, at the film's end, Fahai accepts Neng Ren's transformation and offers him an apple, symbolizing reconciliation with his new nature.

The bat demon's bite was shown to be devastatingly effective earlier when the demon's victims were found.

Q6

Why does Fahai accept Neng Ren at the end despite his transformation?

A.

Fahai accepts Neng Ren's transformation because he realizes that rigidly opposing the nature of beings does more harm than good. Throughout the film, Fahai's unwavering pursuit of demons and his attempts to protect humans from supernatural influence directly caused Susu's tragic fate. By the end, he witnesses the painful consequences of his inflexibility. When he sees Neng Ren, who retains his kind heart despite being a bat demon, Fahai chooses compassion over prejudice, symbolized by offering the apple, a gesture of acceptance and new beginnings.

Fahai's own actions with Susu demonstrated the failure of his rigid approach to demon-hunting.

Q7

How does Susu fall in love with Xu Xian?

A.

Susu first encounters Xu Xian when she and her sister Qingqing are playing in the mountains. After a playful prank causes Xu Xian to fall into a lake, Susu feels sympathy for him and uses her serpent powers to give him a healing kiss that restores his vitality. This act of compassion awakens her genuine feelings for him. Later in the city, Susu deliberately seeks out Xu Xian, and they eventually fall deeply in love, culminating in their marriage. Susu's love is notable because she is willing to risk everything for a human, defying the boundaries between species.

Susu's sympathetic nature was shown when she couldn't ignore Xu Xian's misfortune after the prank.

Q8

Why is Susu's love considered forbidden?

A.

Susu's love is forbidden because she is a snake demon while Xu Xian is a human. The movie's world operates on strict boundaries between humans and demons, enforced by Fahai and Buddhist law. Demons are supposed to be destroyed or imprisoned, not loved. Furthermore, Fahai believes that romantic relationships between humans and demons inevitably lead to tragedy, which is why he desperately tries to separate them. Susu's choice to be with Xu Xian defies these ancient laws and the natural order, making their love tragic and forbidden.

Fahai explicitly warns Susu that their union will bring disaster and threatens dire consequences if she refuses to leave.

Q9

Why does Fahai attack Susu and Xu Xian?

A.

Fahai attacks Susu because he believes it is his sacred duty to eliminate demons and protect humans from supernatural corruption. He sees Susu as a dangerous demon who will ultimately harm Xu Xian, despite her benevolent actions. Fahai is torn because he respects Susu's kindness in healing people, but his religious conviction tells him that the demon-human boundary must be maintained. When Susu refuses to leave Xu Xian, Fahai launches the attack, ultimately trapping her, believing this is the righteous path, even as it brings tragedy.

Fahai's warning to Susu about the consequences of staying with Xu Xian set up the inevitability of conflict.

Q10

What happens to Susu at the end of the movie?

A.

At the end, Susu is permanently trapped inside Lei Feng Pagoda in her serpentine form. Before being sealed away, she shares a final tearful goodbye kiss with Xu Xian, which restores his memories of their love. However, as soon as his memories return, Fahai releases the pagoda, and Susu is drawn back into eternal imprisonment. Xu Xian is left heartbroken, spending his remaining years with the painful knowledge of what he lost. Susu's sacrifice validates her love, but she is never freed from the pagoda's confinement.

The ice harpy's imprisonment in Lei Feng Pagoda earlier established this as the fate awaiting wayward demons.

Q11

Why does Qingqing help Neng Ren find the bat demon king?

A.

Qingqing helps Neng Ren discover the bat demon king's location because she develops a connection with him despite his human status. When they first meet, Neng Ren is still human, and Qingqing is curious about him. Even after Neng Ren becomes a bat demon, Qingqing continues to interact with him, showing that she doesn't judge him by his species, mirroring her sister's love for Xu Xian. At the film's end, Qingqing tells Neng Ren she never wants to experience deep love like her sister did, hinting at her complex feelings about their relationship.

Qingqing's initial curiosity about Neng Ren when they met in the city foreshadowed their ongoing connection.

Q12

What is the purpose of the ice harpy at the beginning of the movie?

A.

The ice harpy encounter serves as an introductory sequence that establishes key elements: Fahai's role as a demon hunter, his loyalty to Neng Ren, and the existence of Lei Feng Pagoda as a demon prison. The whimsical ice harpy also sets the film's tone, blending playful fantasy with darker supernatural threats. More importantly, this quest to help Nengren leads Fahai to cross paths with Xu Xian, whose boat they take to the city. Without this chain of events, Fahai may never have encountered Susu and become entangled in the central tragedy.

The harpy's imprisonment in Lei Feng Pagoda directly parallels Susu's later fate.
