Dal Traven is saved just as a firing squad prepares to execute him at the end of the Civil War. Major Ashbury leads the cavalry and frees him, offering a place in his ongoing fight. On the road toward Texas, Dal unexpectedly meets his brother Mac, who served as a Union officer. The two brothers discover they fought on opposite sides but share a strong family bond. They continue toward Texas together, each carrying the weight of their loyalties.

Dal and Mac reach their Texas homestead to find it looted and their sisters and Kate kidnapped, with their brother Jesse missing. Major Ashbury is tied to the raid, exposing a larger plan to amass weapons for continued fighting. The family must mount a dangerous rescue mission.

Ashbury has set up camp by the Gulf of Mexico, waiting to meet a smuggler named Hammond. He intends to trade the stolen goods and prisoners for firearms to further his war effort. The operation signals a broader conflict looming along the border.

During the chaos, Jesse makes a desperate bid to escape by swimming into the Gulf. He is shot and disappears beneath the waves, leaving the family with another victim and a deeper resolve to fight for those taken. The event heightens the urgency of rescuing Kate and the sisters.

Hammond arrives by boat and takes most of the prisoners, except Kate, toward Mexico to be sold. Ashbury accompanies him, continuing the scheme that began with the raid. The move deepens the siblings' peril and sets their next destination.

Dal and Mac pursue the Confederates, find their wounded brother, and join forces with Kate to assault the camp. They manage to rescue Kate from capture and to reaffirm their bond as a trio determined to save their family. The rescue marks a turning point in their quest for the missing siblings.

Kate informs the brothers that their sisters have been taken to Mexico, and that navigating there requires local knowledge none of them possess. Dal and Mac decide to press on and break their Uncle Jack out of jail to guide them. They prepare for a border-crossing mission under Jack's lead, changing the plan from rescue to pursuit across Mexico.

In Mexico, Ashbury confronts Hammond, who admits he never intended to sell guns and promptly imprisons him. The power dynamic shifts as the hunter becomes the hunted within Hammond's operation. Ashbury's fate becomes intertwined with the Travens' own mission.

Jack leads the group to Hammond's hideout, and a battle erupts. Although Ashbury escapes, he is captured by Dal. Dal decides to spare Ashbury because he had once saved his life, a moment of mercy that underscored the film's moral complexity.

Hammond abducts the Travens' sisters and makes a break for a train. Dal and Mac chase on horseback, catch the train, and save the sisters while capturing Hammond. The rescue solidifies the family's unity and brings them closer to home. The confrontation culminates in Hammond's capture and a return toward Texas.

The Texan sheriff arrives to arrest Uncle Jack, who has been jailed again. The Travens persuade the sheriff to trade Jack for Hammond, the most wanted man in Texas. With Hammond freed and the other prisoners released, all five Travens, Kate, and Jack begin their journey back to Texas as a reunited family.
