What Happens in The Younger Brothers: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Younger Brothers (1949) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Determined to reform from their outlaw ways, Cole Wayne Morris Younger, Jim Bruce Bennett Younger, and Bob James Brown Younger head to Cedar Creek, Minnesota for a parole hearing that could let them return home to Missouri and their farm if they stay out of trouble. The journey is quiet, tentative, and heavy with the weight of past deeds, and the three men cling to a plan to prove their change to both the authorities and themselves.

A detective who blames the Youngers for losing his Pinkerton job, Ryckman Fred Clark, is eager to settle scores. He goads John into a situation at a saloon where a man is killed. Ryckman urges townspeople to turn Sheriff Knudson Alan Hale against all the Youngers. Hatch Tom Tyler watches the town's mood, and Deputy Joe Monte Blue stands ready in the background.

Katie Shepherd Janis Paige, who leads a rough band of her own, fails to win the Youngers over and sets a trap. Cole Wayne Morris is taken hostage and forced to join Katie's gang for a bank robbery, with the threat that John Robert Hutton will be harmed if he resists. Jim Bruce Bennett and Bob James Brown watch with growing alarm as their brother appears armed and riding with the outlaws, not realizing Cole has been given an unloaded gun to keep him safe in the dangerous negotiation.

The robbery goes wrong and Katie is killed. Ryckman continues to press the chase, surrounding their campsite with the intent to lynch them. In the end, though, the Youngers are cleared of wrongdoing and ride away free and clear.
