Lee Barrett, George Maharis, a former intelligence agent, is approached by a man offering him a job with a political group opposing bioweapons. The man proves to be an impersonator sent by Barrett’s former boss, Eric Cavanaugh, to test his loyalty, pulling him into a high-stakes game of deception and danger. Cavanaugh tasks Barrett with investigating the murder of the security chief and the disappearance of Dr. Baxter, the head scientist at Station Three, a secret bioweapons laboratory.
Barrett and Cavanaugh arrive at the laboratory, where Dr. Gregor Hoffman, Richard Basehart, urges them to seal the facility with concrete. Inside, they learn there are two deadly bioweapons locked away: a strain of botulinus that oxidizes after eight hours and a newly developed virus, the Satan Bug, capable of wiping out all life on Earth. The atmosphere grows tense as the clock ticks, and Barrett ventures into the sealed lab, only to find Dr. Baxter dead and the vials containing the viruses missing.
A mysterious telegram from Barrett’s former flame, Ann Williams, Anne Francis, pulls him back into the case. Ann is assigned to work alongside him, and together they begin to unravel a web of intrigue that leads them to Charles Reynolds Ainsley, a reclusive billionaire and pharmaceutical magnate who becomes the prime suspect. As the investigation deepens, Ainsley demonstrates the botulinus threat in Florida, threatening to unleash more devastation in Los Angeles County unless Station Three is shut down.
Barrett and Ann pursue a lead that brings them to an abandoned car, where they recover the missing vials only to be confronted by armed men who force them to the home of Dr. Hoffman. Unbeknownst to the henchmen, security agents are tailing them. At Hoffman’s residence, a tense pursuit unfolds, and a confrontation at an abandoned gas station ensues. Barrett manages to keep Ann hostage while he makes a daring escape from a burning garage, narrowly avoiding capture.
A critical pivot occurs when Hoffman, who has been courting both sides, double-crosses his own men. He’s driven to reveal a dangerous deal to locate the vials in Los Angeles, and the two men strike a tentative accord to pursue the vials together. As security agents close in, Ainsley is arrested, and Barrett realizes the agents are actually Ainsley’s security guards. A brutal showdown follows, and Ainsley, threatening to release the Satan Bug, drops the vial during a struggle. Barrett seizes the device and gains control of a helicopter, while Ainsley leaps to his death.
The chase culminates with Ann and the authorities discovering the remaining vials hidden in the ice inside a concession stand at the Los Angeles baseball stadium. Barrett makes contact with Ann and his superiors to coordinate the final disarmament of the bombs. In a climactic sequence, he works to bring the helicopter in for a careful landing, reflecting that the mission—fraught with peril and betrayal—has come full circle. The threat is neutralized, the city is safe, and Barrett’s resolve to prevent another catastrophe remains unshaken.
