The Road to Singapore

An ocean liner travels from Colombo to Singapore where Hugh Dawltry observes fellow passenger Philippa Crosby. They try to get to know each other, but Dawltry's attempts are unsuccessful. Both passengers are set to disembark together at Khota, marking the start of their intertwined stories.

Ashore at Khota, Philippa rebuffs Hugh Dawltry's romantic advances, informing him that she is engaged to marry Dr. George March. She emphasizes her commitment despite her feelings for Dawltry, highlighting her resolve to marry George.

Philippa marries Dr. George March, but quickly finds her marriage disappointed. George is absorbed in his work and does not take her on a honeymoon, leading to her growing dissatisfaction and loneliness.

As time passes, Philippa finds herself increasingly attracted to Hugh Dawltry, who remains a constant in her thoughts. During the native village drums signaling marriage festivals, both she and Dawltry reflect on their feelings, feeling drawn towards each other.

Philippa's brother, Rene, a scandalized young woman, visits Hugh Dawltry. When Rene refuses to leave his bungalow, Dawltry frightens her into fleeing by physically lifting her into his bedroom, triggering conflict with her brother George.

George confronts his sister Rene about her presence at Dawltry's house, suspecting improper motives. He forces her to accompany him on a trip and threatens Dawltry with a gun, escalating their conflict and revealing tensions amid the community.

Philippa visits Dawltry for dinner, where they confess their mutual feelings. Dawltry shares his past and invites her to join him on a sailing trip, deepening their emotional connection amidst the complexities of their lives.

George cancels his trip to Colombo after his patient with a rare disease dies, causing tension and regret. His concern shifts to the scandal and photographs, revealing his focus on reputation rather than the patient's well-being.

Philippa, feeling neglected and disillusioned with Dawltry's indifference, decides to leave him. She openly criticizes his focus on scandal over her feelings and departs in their car, signifying her rejection of his coldness.
