Joel Curtis Ted Donaldson is a young orphan living with his grandmother Aggie Curtis Jane Darwell on a weathered ranch, where every day carries the weight of unpaid bills and looming foreclosure. While wandering near the woods, he discovers an orphaned colt and names him Red, a horse with surprising promise and a stubborn streak. As Joel and Aggie face the reality that the farm could be sold to settle debts, a spark of hope appears when Joel befriends Andy McBride Robert Paige, a loyal ranch hand at the nearby Moresby Farms, who becomes an ally and mentor in this unexpected plan.
With a mix of grit and optimism, Joel convinces Andy to help train Red as a racehorse, dreaming of selling the colt to raise enough money to save the family’s home. The plan gains momentum when they enlist Ellen Reynolds [Noreen Nash], a capable trainer at Moresby Farms, to pit Red against the farm’s star, Black Moor. The race proves challenging for the unseasoned Red, who loses because he doesn’t stay tight to the inside rail, exposing both his raw talent and his inexperience.
Undeterred, Joel approaches Mr. Moresby [Pierre Watkin], laying out a bold proposition: they would supply horses from the Curtis ranch to Moresby Farms, but only if those horses can outrun Black Moor. Moresby agrees to consider the deal, yet sets a high bar, insisting that only horses capable of beating Black Moor will be bought. As foreclosure looms closer, Joel and Ho-Na, a Native American worker for Aggie, toil at night on Moresby’s track, pushing Red through careful, patient training to sharpen his speed and stamina. Joel’s dog Curley adds a keen edge to the routine, barking to nudge Red back toward the inside rail whenever the colt strays, a small but crucial boost in the battle for discipline.
Time presses on, and Moresby promises one final test for Red on the morning before the auction. That night, Red slips from the barn and strides into the woods, where a bear attack tests his spirit; he escapes but returns exhausted, unfit to race the next day. Yet the following morning, Joel leads Red into the arena once more, racing him against Black Moor and turning the tables with a hard-won victory that convinces Moresby to purchase Red for a substantial sum, effectively saving Aggie’s ranch. At Aggie Curtis’s suggestion, Moresby makes Joel a co-owner of Red, a gesture that honors the boy’s dedication and the bond forged through countless miles of training and hope.
In the aftermath of the win, Andy and Ellen reveal the depth of their feelings for one another, adding a quiet, human warmth to the story as a new chapter begins for the people who stood by Red and the farm all along.
