The Princess and the Dragon (2018) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Tiana turns into a frog because she kisses Naveen thinking he is a real prince who can break his own curse. However, Naveen was already a frog when she kissed him, and the magic transfers the curse to her as well. The spell requires a kiss from a true princess to break the frog curse, which is why Tiana's kiss doesn't work, she was only wearing a princess costume borrowed from Charlotte.

Foreshadowing: Earlier at the ball, Charlotte lends Tiana a princess costume, which leads to Naveen mistaking her for royalty.

Dr. Facilier plans to seize the La Bouff fortune by using a magical talisman containing Naveen's blood. He transforms Naveen into a frog and changes his assistant Lawrence into a double of Naveen. The scheme involves having the disguised Lawrence marry Charlotte La Bouff, which would give Facilier control over the family wealth through manipulation of the royal connection.

Foreshadowing: The voodoo doctor is introduced as a sinister figure who promises to help Naveen in exchange for something, hinting at his true motives.

Charlotte can only break the frog spell while she is a princess, which only lasts until midnight on Mardi Gras. Once the clock strikes midnight and Mardi Gras ends, she returns to being a regular person, losing the royal status needed to provide the kiss that would restore Naveen and Tiana to human form.

Foreshadowing: Mama Odie warns that the solution depends on a princess whose reign is temporary, referencing Charlotte's limited time as Mardi Gras royalty.

Tiana becomes a princess when she and Naveen marry at the end of the film. Dr. Facilier's shadow demons are supernatural creatures he summons from the 'other side', the spiritual realm connected to voodoo magic. He calls them his 'friends on the other side' and uses them to do his bidding, including capturing Naveen and threatening the city. However, these spirits are essentially debt collectors who demand payment for the magic they provide, eventually turning on Facilier when he fails to deliver.

Foreshadowing: Facilier repeatedly references his 'friends on the other side' whenever he needs magical assistance, hinting at the transactional nature of his power.
