The Prince Who Was a Thief

Yussef, a master thief hired by Regent Prince Mustapha's agent to assassinate the infant prince Hussein, could not go through with the killing. Instead of completing the job, he chose to raise the child as his own son, naming him Julna and keeping him hidden from the palace. This act of compassion sets up the entire story, as Julna grows up unaware of his royal heritage.

Yussef's initial refusal to commit murder establishes his moral character early in the film, which later explains why the guards ultimately side with Julna.

Julna's only proof of royal lineage was a tattoo of the royal seal on his arm, which Yussef kept hidden by having Julna wear a silver armband covering it at all times. This simple concealment allowed Julna to grow up among thieves in Tangiers without anyone, including Julna himself, knowing he was the true heir to the throne.

After being caught by Julna and Yussef and forced to help them infiltrate the palace, Tina secretly stole the pearl back each time it was returned. Her motives were twofold: her growing feelings for Julna made her jealous of Yasmin's desire for the gem, and she was instinctively drawn to valuable prizes as a lifelong thief. This repeated theft created suspicion around Yussef and escalated the conflict.

Mustapha tasked Yussef with recovering the stolen pearl and capturing the thief. To lure the culprit into a trap, Julna devised a fake lottery scheme offering a large ruby as the prize. This drew Tina out of hiding and into Yussef's coffeehouse, where she was caught with the pearl in her possession.

Yasmin, consumed by her desire for the Pearl of Fatima, suspected Julna still had the gem. She offered to marry him as a trap, once he came to see her, she planned to have him killed and take the pearl from his body. This reveals Yasmin's character as being driven by greed rather than genuine affection for Julna.

When Tina threatened to destroy the pearl to stop the fighting, she revealed Julna's true identity as the rightful ruler of Tangiers. The guards, who had remained loyal to the old king, instantly turned against Mustapha upon learning the true prince had returned. This shift in loyalty enabled the final victory and Julna's ascension to the throne.

Julna marries Tina, the street acrobat and thief who became his partner throughout the adventure. Though he initially fell in love with Yasmin during his first palace raid, his feelings shifted to Tina as they worked together through dangerous missions. Tina proved her loyalty by warning him of traps and ultimately revealing his identity to save him, making her his true partner and queen.

After the guards revolted in favor of Julna, both Prince Mustapha and Yasmin were captured and banished from Tangiers. Mustapha, who had ruled as regent by usurping the throne and ordering the infant prince's murder, lost his power. Yasmin, who had plotted to have Julna killed for the pearl, also faced exile as a result of the regime change.

The Pearl of Fatima serves as the central plot device that propels the narrative forward. When Tina steals it from Yasmin, Hedjah threatens to destroy Tangiers unless it is recovered within a month. This forces Mustapha to enlist Yussef and creates the chain of events, fake lottery, infiltration, love triangle schemes, that brings Julna closer to the palace and ultimately to his destiny as ruler.

Julna discovers his true identity when he reveals it to Tina during an argument, intending to take the pearl back from Mokar. Up to that point, only Yussef knew that Julna was actually Prince Hussein, the true heir to Tangiers' throne. The revelation comes when Julna feels unworthy of marrying Tina, prompting him to confess his secret.
