Tsar Nicholas I falls for Natalia, Alexander Pushkin's wife, and hides his desire by using Benckendorff to promote officer Georges d’Anthès. Pushkin, hearing rumors of d’Anthès's interest, challenges him to a duel. To protect himself, d’Anthès marries Natalia's sister Ekaterina. Back at his estate, Pushkin gets anonymous letters and demands the duel.
