The Pied Piper

In the bleak spring of 1940, Europe is rattled by the rapid advance of German forces. France is fractured, its roads choked with refugees and its towns shadowed by the presence of occupying troops. John Sidney Howard is an aging Englishman whose quiet fishing holiday in eastern France suddenly turns into a personal reckoning. When Mrs. Cavanaugh, a League of Nations official’s wife, learns that the German advance may soon seal the Swiss border, she entrusts her two young children—Ronnie Cavanaugh and Sheila Cavanaugh—to Howard’s reluctant care. Though initially resistant to the idea of shepherding a pair of lively, contradicting youngsters, Howard discovers that the children’s presence reshapes his solitary mission.
