The Pawnbroker (1965) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of The Pawnbroker (1965), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In Nazi Germany, Sol Nazerman, a Jewish professor, tragically finds himself and his family imprisoned in a concentration camp. There, he is forced to witness the horrific deaths of his two children and the brutal assault of his wife by the Nazi officers, culminating in her murder.

Fast forward twenty-five years, Nazerman is still tormented by those haunting memories. He operates a pawnshop nestled in an impoverished East Harlem neighborhood, living an isolated life in a Long Island housing tract alongside his sister-in-law, also a Holocaust survivor, and her husband. Emotionally scarred and desensitized from his past, he perceives himself as utterly bitter, viewing the struggling individuals around him with disdain, calling them “scum” and “rejects.” His interactions are marked by cynicism, as he offers meager sums for the valuables brought in by his desperate clientele.

Among those who look up to him is Jesus Ortiz, a young, ambitious Puerto Rican who shares a home with his mother and works at the pawnshop as an assistant. Despite Ortiz’s admiration, which leads him to call Nazerman his “teacher,” he finds his overtures of friendship consistently dismissed. The shadowy world surrounding them includes Ortiz’s girlfriend, who resorts to prostitution under the thumb of Rodriguez, a racketeer who uses the pawnshop as a façade for his illicit activities. After hours, Nazerman imparts lessons about precious metals and the value of money—his only remaining interests—to Ortiz, who seeks a brighter future.

The tangled web of desperation grows tense when Ortiz’s girlfriend attempts to pawn jewelry to help finance their dreams, even offering herself to Nazerman for greater profits—a proposition he declines. Learning of Rodriguez’s connections to the brothels that sustain his wealth brings back painful memories of his wife’s humiliation in the camps. Nazerman’s growing disillusionment leads him to sever ties with Rodriguez, declaring to Ortiz that he means nothing to him. This harsh revelation crushes Ortiz, pushing him to orchestrate a robbery of the pawnshop by a local gang led by Tangee.

As events unfold, Rodriguez’s enforcers confront Nazerman, threatening him for not cooperating with their money laundering schemes. In a moment of despair, Nazerman wishes for death, a fate Rodriguez cavalierly acknowledges will come, just not today.

During the robbery, Nazerman stands his ground, refusing to surrender his money. When a gun is drawn, tragedy strikes as Ortiz is fatally shot while attempting to protect him. Nazerman can only watch helplessly as Ortiz drags himself onto the street, ultimately succumbing to his injuries. Overwhelmed by grief, Nazerman steps back inside the shop in silence, then seemingly succumbs to his torment as he impales his hand on a receipt spike, wandering away—likely never to return.
