Set during World War I, the inexperienced English Lieutenant Raleigh is assigned to the unit led by the jaded Captain Stanhope, who is secretly engaged to Raleigh’s sister and strives to preserve his reputation as an exemplary officer. During a disastrous assault on German positions both men experience the brutal realities of war, a trauma that has already worn down Stanhope.
