After his father Ah Min is killed by Hunac Ceel's metal-armed forces, Balam's advisers convince him that retreat is the only option for survival. The Mayans cannot defeat Hunac Ceel's superior army with their wooden and obsidian weapons, so Balam agrees to lead his people across the Gulf Coast to regroup and eventually fight back.
