The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Gandalf defeated the Balrog in Moria but also perished in the process. However, he was sent back by Ilúvatar with enhanced power, returning as Gandalf the White. This transformation restored him with greater wisdom and authority, allowing him to guide Aragorn's company and confront Saruman directly.

Gandalf's earlier battle with the Balrog is shown in Frodo's dream at the start of the film.

Frodo captures Gollum in Emyn Muil and, feeling compassion for the creature's suffering, chooses to set him free. He recognizes that Gollum possesses intimate knowledge of the paths into Mordor from centuries of living there. Despite Sam's objections, Frodo believes they need Gollum's expertise to navigate the dangerous lands surrounding Mount Doom.

Saruman manipulated Théoden through his advisor Gríma Wormtongue, who had been corrupted and secretly served Saruman. Gríma poisoned the king's mind, casting doubt and fear into Théoden, effectively turning him into a puppet ruler. Gandalf eventually breaks this spell, restoring Théoden's clarity and courage.

Éomer mentions Théoden's strange behavior and explains he has been ensnared by Saruman's influence.

The Ent Council, led by the oldest ents, believed the entwash (their river) and the world would take its course without direct intervention. They viewed the conflict between men and wizards as irrelevant to their slow, ancient existence. Pippin and Merry's arguments and their exposure to the devastation at Isengard ultimately changed Treebeard's mind.

Merry and Pippin initially fail to convince the Ents at the council meeting.

The battle seemed lost when the Uruk-hai breached the walls with explosives and the Elven forces, including Haldir, fell in battle. However, as dawn broke and defeat appeared certain, Gandalf returned with Éomer and the Rohirrim, charging into the remaining Uruk-hai. This cavalry assault destroyed Saruman's army and marked the turning point of the battle.

Gandalf departs Edoras to find Éomer and his riders, promising to return before the battle.

Faramir initially intends to take the Ring to his father Denethor in Gondor, similar to how Boromir tried to take it. However, Frodo's appeal to the Ring's corrupting influence and Sam's story of Boromir's fall cause Faramir to recognize the Ring's danger. He ultimately releases Frodo and Sam, understanding that the Ring would destroy his family and Gondor.

Gollum feels betrayed when Faramir's rangers capture the group and Frodo speaks up to save his life. Gollum had hoped the rangers would kill the hobbits, allowing him to reclaim the Ring. Feeling abandoned and resentful, Gollum decides to lead Frodo and Sam into Cirith Ungol, knowing the spider Shelob waits there to kill them.

Elrond warns Arwen that if she stays in Middle-earth while Aragorn rides to war, she will outlive him by millennia and face a life of diminishing hope. Despite this, Arwen chooses to remain, giving up her immortality and the undying lands to be with Aragorn, demonstrating her commitment to their love.

When Saruman's Warg-riding Orcs ambush the refugee group, Aragorn falls from a cliff and appears dead. However, the loyal horse Brego finds him and carries him back to Helm's Deep. Aragorn arrives just in time to warn Théoden of Saruman's advancing army, allowing the kingdom to prepare for the imminent attack.

Galadriel contacts Elrond and persuades him that the alliance between Elves and Men must endure. She argues that if Rohan falls, all of Middle-earth will be vulnerable to Sauron and Saruman. This results in a company of Lothlórien Elves, led by Haldir, arriving to reinforce Helm's Deep before the battle begins.

Gollum leads Frodo and Sam through the Dead Marshes, a treacherous wetland filled with the corpses of ancient warriors. He then guides them toward the Black Gate of Mordor, though he secretly plots to lead them into danger. Eventually, he redirects them toward the pass at Cirith Ungol as part of his betrayal.

While traveling through the besieged city of Osgiliath with Faramir, Frodo is attacked by a Nazgûl on a flying beast. The Ringwraith nearly ensnares him, and the experience pushes Frodo closer to the Ring's corrupting influence. Sam's encouragement and reminder of the larger fight for Middle-earth help Frodo resist and continue onward.

When Gandalf frees Théoden from Saruman's influence, the king prepares to execute Gríma for his treachery. Aragorn intervenes, showing mercy and allowing Gríma to escape. This decision proves problematic as Gríma later flees to Isengard and continues serving Saruman, though it also reflects Aragorn's character as a leader who offers redemption.
