The Long Absence

The film, set sixteen years after the conclusion of World War II, follows the life of Thérèse Langlois, who now owns a cozy pub in Puteaux, Paris. As she winds down her busy season, she carefully plans her annual trip to Chaulieu with her lover. However, her emotional connection with him seems to be fading, hinting at underlying feelings and lingering past memories.

A recurring presence at her pub is an intriguing tramp, who passes by daily, singing opera songs such as The Barber of Seville, capturing the attention of Thérèse and her patrons alike. Curious about his story and identity, Thérèse has her bartender, Martine, invite the tramp for a drink. The man, who claims he lives by the river, confesses that he suffers from amnesia, but he possesses some identification suggesting his name is Robert Landais.

After the tramp leaves her pub, Thérèse is unable to shake her suspicion and follows him to the river. She studies his face and mannerisms, convinced that he is, in fact, her long-lost husband, Albert Langlois. Driven by this hope, she takes steps to help him remember his true identity. Thérèse enlists her aunt Alice, played by Catherine Fonteney, and she also calls upon Albert’s nephew to join her in unraveling the mystery.

While the tramp sits at another table, Alice and the nephew dramatically recount Albert’s past. They tell of how, during the war, Albert was arrested in Chaulieu in June 1944 and handed over to the Gestapo in Angers. He was held in a camp with his close friend, Aldo Ganbini, a friend who was also linked to the family. Thérèse’s background is connected to Chaulieu, as she is also a Ganbini, having stayed in Puteaux. Despite their explanations, the tramp leaves the pub without acknowledging himself as Albert. Alice admits she did not recognize him and doubts he is Albert, also mentioning that Albert never knew opera.

Thérèse remains convinced that the man might still be her husband. She argues that Albert could have learned the opera songs during captivity with Aldo, keeping her hope alive. In a move that signals her deep emotional attachment, Thérèse ends her relationship with her lover, seeking solace in a dinner with the tramp, which leads to a dance. Despite her efforts, the man shows no signs of recognizing his past or himself as Albert.

As the tramp departs, Thérèse calls out “Albert Langlois” loudly, and some friends attempt to support her suspicions. The tramp halts, raises his hands in a surrendering gesture, and quickly runs away, narrowly avoiding a traffic accident. Her friends advise patience and caution, suggesting that the man might not recall his past and that it’s better to give up the quest. However, Thérèse remains unresolved, determined to try once more during the winter season to awaken the remembered life of Albert within him.

This story explores themes of memory, identity, and the enduring hope of reconnecting with lost loved ones. Thérèse’s unwavering belief that she can restore her husband’s memories forms the emotional core of the film—highlighting the human tendency to cling to hope even in the face of uncertainty.
