The Liberation of L.B. Jones

L.B. Jones, a wealthy funeral director in Somerton, hires the local law firm run by Oman Hedgepath and his newlywed nephew Steve Mundine to pursue a divorce from his younger wife Emma. He suspects Emma is having an affair with white police officer Willie Joe Worth and fears the unborn child may be fathered by Worth. He wants a discreet legal path to separate from Emma.

Worth begs Emma not to contest the divorce to avoid a scandal, while Emma hopes to secure a favorable alimony to maintain her lavish lifestyle. The disagreement over publicity and money sets the stage for coercive measures. Hedgepath begins to prepare for the case behind the scenes.

After Jones refuses to withdraw the divorce suit, Worth and fellow officer Stanley Bumpas beat Emma and arrest Jones on trumped up charges. The maneuver shows how the police can be used to protect personal interests and derail the divorce. The plan marks the descent into a cover up that will follow.
