The Legion

Romulus Augustulus is crowned as the Western Emperor, marking a significant moment in his young life. Alongside his father Orestes, they are determined to maintain control over Italy against the Gothic warlord Odoacer.

On the same day of his coronation, Romulus meets Aurelius, the general of the Nova Invicta Legion. This meeting foreshadows the alliance that will soon be necessary to defend against the impending Gothic threat.

Rome is suddenly attacked by the Goths, leading to chaos and bloodshed. The Nova Invicta Legion suffers heavy losses, and Aurelius finds himself left for dead after the onslaught.

Orestes and his wife are brutally killed by Wulfila, a lieutenant of Odoacer, as Romulus is captured. This marks a turning point for Romulus as he transitions from emperor to a fugitive.

Odoacer, having taken control of the Western Empire, considers killing Romulus. However, under the influence of Ambrosinus, he chooses to spare Romulus and instead exiles him to Capri.

In a villa built during Emperor Tiberius's reign, Romulus discovers a hidden chamber. Inside, he finds a statue of Julius Caesar holding a sword, which is believed to be part of a prophecy that marks him as a future ruler.

Aurelius and surviving soldiers, including Vatrenus, Batiatus, and Demetrius, rescue Romulus and Ambrosinus from their captivity. They embark on a perilous journey to escape to safety.

The group learns that the Eastern Empire has betrayed them and sided with Odoacer. Despite their efforts to find safe passage to Constantinople, they are forced to seek refuge elsewhere.

Ambrosinus encourages Romulus to seek refuge in Britain, where it is believed loyal Roman forces might still exist. Their journey takes them across treacherous terrain, including the Alps and the English Channel.

Upon arrival in Britain, Romulus and his companions reach Hadrian's Wall and meet a former commanding general of the Roman legion. They discover that the legion has disbanded, living in fear of a local warlord.

As the group seeks shelter, they learn of Vortgyn, a tyrannical warlord who has allied with Wulfila and the Goths. Vortgyn’s desire to obtain Caesar's sword poses a significant threat to Romulus.

Aurelius takes charge and beginning mobilizing an army to confront Vortgyn. As tensions rise, Romulus decides to fight for his life and the future of his new friends at Hadrian's Wall.

In a fierce confrontation, the forces of Romulus face Vortgyn and Wulfila's soldiers. The tide of battle turns when Ambrosinus emerges, killing Vortgyn and rallying their forces against the Goths.

After a brutal encounter, Romulus, now both battle-hardened and weary, disposes of Caesar's sword. He embeds it in a stone, symbolizing the weight of his responsibilities and the lives lost.

Many years later, Ambrosinus, now known as Merlin, recounts the legacy of Romulus and Igraine to a young boy. Romulus is remembered as a wise ruler named Pendragon, with the sword still embedded in the stone, a testament to his journey.
