Set in mid‑19th‑century Paris, the film follows courtesan Marguerite Gautier and young provincial bourgeois Armand Duval as their passionate affair descends into tragedy. Armand’s disapproving father convinces Marguerite to leave, lying that she has gone to another man, sealing their doomed fate.
