The House of Seven Corpses

Eric Hartman is a film director who ambitiously decides to shoot a horror movie inside the Beal house, a mansion with a dark history where numerous members of the Beal family met violent deaths—ranging from accidents and suicides to outright murder. He hopes that filming on the actual site will give the project a chilling realism, and the crew gathers to begin the shoot on the sprawling estate.

Edgar Price, the house caretaker, accompanies the cast and crew as they tour the rooms and the graveyard, pointing out the sites of former deaths and guiding them to the top-floor bedrooms where they’ll stay during production. The day’s investigation is interrupted when Anne, the actress playing a Beal relative, discovers scattered occult books in a bedroom, hinting at a deeper influence behind the house’s haunted atmosphere. Later that night, Gayle Dorian, who portrays Maria Beal, reads from a volume known as The Book of the Dead and intones a chilling chant: “Exsurgent mortui et ad me veniunt” — may the dead rise and come to me. The room falls silent, but Edgar demurs that the scene isn’t historically accurate, offering a calm corrective to the improvised fright escalating around them.

The crew continues the night’s work, and the tension thickens as Edgar leads them on a tour of the estate’s most troubling locations, including the graveyard behind the house. Anne notices Edgar retreating into one of the rooms, while later, Gayle’s pet cat, Cleon, escapes from her room and leads her downstairs. There, her drunken co-star, Christopher Millan, violates her, prompting a struggle that Eric Hartman intervenes to stop. After the confrontation, Eric shows his crew that he has captured some footage in the cemetery, including Edgar in the graveyard, which unsettles them further when they realize Edgar actually climbed into a coffin.

The following day, during a scene shot outside, Gayle screams upon discovering her dead cat in the grass, and Eric suspects foul play. He investigates and finds a gun in a locked drawer in Edgar’s quarters, which he steals, though Edgar vehemently denies killing the cat. Edgar resumes his nocturnal work by etching the name Cleon on a headstone, leaving the impression that the house’s history is physically inscribed in its stones. When Gayle wavers about continuing with the production, Eric manages to persuade her to stay on.

On the film’s final day of principal photography, David—a crew member—takes up the Book of the Dead and recites a chant while Gayle performs a scene in which her character, Maria, resurrects a lover’s dead body. Simultaneously, Edgar hears something coming from the cemetery and goes to investigate. A zombie emerges from a grave and strangles him in the darkness. After filming ends, Eric congratulates the cast, and they retire for the night. Soon afterward, the zombie arrives at the house and kills three crew members—Ron, Danny, and Tommy—as they dismantle equipment, their bodies left behind in a scene of horror and confusion.

Gayle witnesses the zombie climbing the staircase and rushes to Edgar’s bedroom to grab his gun, hoping to defend herself. In a panic, she shoots Christopher, mistaking him for the undead figure. The gunshot brings Anne running, only to discover Gayle’s body hanging from a rope, an image that leaves her horrified and fainting.

Meanwhile, Eric and David go to film pick-ups in the cemetery and discover Edgar’s corpse near an empty grave. David suddenly attacks Eric, but the struggle ends with David tumbling into the grave. Beneath a thin layer of dirt, Eric notices a grave marker that reads “David Beal: 1847–1896.” The deceased David rises as a zombie, forcing Eric to flee back to the house. There, he finds the bodies of the three murdered crew members together with Gayle, Christopher, and Anne. In a moment of mounting hysteria, Eric watches as his spools of film lie destroyed on the floor. The zombie then hurls a film camera from the top of the stairs onto Eric’s head, killing him. The creature drags Anne’s corpse back to the cemetery and eventually disappears into the grave with it, leaving the living to confront the haunted legacy of the Beal house.
