In 1935, two families move into a crowded communal apartment on the outskirts of Moscow: the Davydovs, with their three children, and the newlyweds Dmitri Kashirin and Lida Kashirina. The Davydovs emerge as the central figures, and the story follows their lives and the tangled web of relationships that grow around them. As the children come of age, both they and the adults wrestle with questions of identity, purpose, and morality, navigating conflicts, reconciliations, and the ever-present complexities of daily life in a shared space.

Lida Kashirina feels no real love for her husband, a geologist who is frequently away on expeditions. Inspired by Dmitri Kashirin, Sergey also develops an interest in geology, weaving scientific curiosity into his growing personal ambitions.

The outbreak of World War II shatters their quiet lives, forcing them to confront new priorities and severing or redefining old loyalties. Tragedy dispatches both Dmitri Kashirin and Pavel Davydov in the war, while Konstantin Davydov returns home disabled, his body and spirit bearing the scars of battle.
