The short explores anthropophobia, the fear of people, through Catherine Starr’s life. After a 1901 argument, her fiancé leaves for the Boer War and later dies of malaria, leaving her feeling guilty. She isolates herself in her coastal home for forty years, receiving groceries unseen. The September 1941 Nazi bombing forces her to confront the outside world.
