What Happens in Down House: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Down House (2001) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Prince Lev Nikolaevich Myshkin Fyodor Bondarchuk returns to Moscow after a prolonged stay in a Swiss psychiatric clinic. On the bus ride home, he crosses paths with Parfyon Rogozhin Ivan Okhlobystin, a wealthy merchant whose presence unsettles those around him. Seeking shelter, Myshkin visits his distant relative, General Lizaveta Prokofyevna Yepanchina Barbara Brylska, who introduces him to her daughters: Alexandra Elena Kondulaynen, Adelaide Natalia Simakova, and Aglaya Yelena Kotelnikova.

The central thread unfolds around the planned marriage between Nastasya Filippovna Anna Buklovskaya and Ganya Ivolgin Mikhail Vladimirov, a secretary to the General. Nastasya, who has been kept by the wealthy and debauched Totsky who seduced her in her youth, regards herself as a fallen woman, while Ganya dreams of securing a financial windfall by marrying money. Into this web steps Myshkin, whose innocence and moral clarity awaken the better (and sometimes the worst) in those he encounters, drawing him toward Nastasya and, intriguingly, toward Aglaya, who declares her love for him and competes for his affection.

As the narrative unfolds, Myshkin acts as a mirror and catalyst, revealing the best in others but unable to reshape their fates. The relationships become increasingly fraught with jealousy, pride, and social pressures, all intensified by the setting: a futuristic Moscow filled with towering skyscrapers and advanced technology. The film preserves the core arc of the source novel, while playfully exaggerating Moscow society, bending social boundaries for comedic effect and social critique.

Tragedy arrives decisively: Nastasya Filippovna is murdered by Rogozhin, a crime born of jealousy and passion, and Myshkin, already fragile, collapses into madness once more. The ending underscores the impossibility of redeeming or fixing a world where entanglements, desires, and class expectations run so deep. Yet the film remains faithful to its roots, offering a lush, character-driven portrait of love, rivalry, and moral conflict within an imagined, technologically charged Moscow.

Q3

Why does Ganya Ivolgin want to marry Nastasya Filippovna?

Ganya wants to marry Nastasya primarily for financial gain rather than love. He is a secretary to General Yepanchin and is under significant financial pressure. By marrying Nastasya, he expects to receive a payout from Totsky, the wealthy man who previously kept her. His mercenary motivation exposes the corruption and social climbing prevalent in Moscow society.

He awakens goodness in people but cannot reshape the deeper entanglements of desire, jealousy, and class expectations. His role as a catalyst reveals both the best and worst in others, yet tragic outcomes remain inevitable.
