In a distant future, humanity faces a new threat as alien entities known as Souls invade various planets. These non-corporeal psychic parasites infiltrate dominant species by replacing their consciousness and accessing their memories, leaving identifiable silver rings in their eyes.

Teenager Melanie Stryder becomes the host for a Soul named Wanderer. As Wanderer delves into Melanie's memories, the Seeker pressures her to find a hidden group of unassimilated humans, igniting a struggle as Melanie’s consciousness refuses to disappear.

Melanie, along with her younger brother Jamie and boyfriend Jared, embarks on a quest to locate her uncle Jeb in the desert. As memories are shared, this journey reveals the dangers they face from the Souls and the emotional ties that bind them.

Wanderer, guided by Melanie’s memories, successfully escapes the city and reunites with Jeb in the desert. Jeb leads Wanderer to a secret network of human survivors, including Jared and Jamie, hidden in caves away from the Souls.
