Harry Collings and Arch Harris are two wandering saddle tramps who have spent seven long years traversing the vast landscapes of the American Southwest. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they, along with their younger companion Dan Griffen, stumble upon the tragic discovery of a small white child’s corpse in a river. In a moment that hits Harry hard, he decides to return the child’s body to the water, watching it drift away downstream.

Their travels lead them to the ramshackle town of Del Norte, an isolated place with secrets of its own. Here, unbeknownst to them, a corrupt boss named McVey runs the show. While Arch and Dan contemplate heading to California in search of work, Harry reveals a surprising decision: he is tired of drifting and longs to reunite with his wife, Hannah, and their daughter, whom he left seven years ago. As Dan heads back into the bar to purchase a bottle, tragedy strikes. McVey, lusting after Dan’s horse, plots with his thugs to eliminate him. In a sinister act of violence, McVey murders Dan, later fabricating a story that presents him as a rapist. Harry and Arch, initially unaware of the truth, reluctantly accept McVey’s tale and depart to bury their friend. However, driven by vengeance, they return at dawn to confront McVey. In a moment of reckoning, Harry incapacitates the sleeping villain by shooting him in both feet, and they manage to escape with Dan’s horse.

The journey home is anything but easy. Upon returning to his family, Harry is met with an unexpectedly frosty reception from his wife, Hannah Collings. With a desire to be accepted back into her life, he and Arch offer their services as hired hands. As they immerse themselves in work around the farm, an underlying tension brews. Arch subtly reveals his feelings for Hannah, complicating their already strained dynamics. Gradually, the years of estrangement subside, and Harry and Hannah start to reconnect deeply. Harry is ready to embrace a settled life, but Arch, sensing his role as an obstacle to their happiness, makes the decision to leave, expressing a yearning to “see the ocean.”

But peace is short-lived as McVey and his gang shatter Harry’s newfound domestic bliss. A messenger bears grim news: Arch has been kidnapped and brutally tortured. Fueled by desperation to save his friend, Harry once again leaves Hannah behind. In a fierce confrontation, Harry engages McVey’s gang in a brutal shootout, eliminating all the villains, though he suffers fatal injuries in the chaos.

In a poignant epilogue, the aftermath unfolds as Hannah watches Arch ride up to the farm alone, leading a second horse behind him. He places the horses in the barn and heads inside, where he will now live as a “hired hand” — a poignant reminder of the cycles of loss and resolution in their lives.
