In St. Louis, Grandfather Xu travels from China to visit his son, Datong Xu, a video game designer who has lived in the United States for eight years. During a moment of public recognition, Datong speaks about his affection for America and the sense of achievement he associates with the American Dream. The visit reveals a tender intergenerational dynamic as they try to bridge language and cultural gaps while navigating a new life far from home.

Back at home, Dennis Xu shows a slight fever; the elder tries a traditional Gua Sha treatment because Dennis cannot read English medicine labels. The marks on his back alarm social workers, and what began as a private family moment becomes a crisis when the child protection agency steps in. The family’s everyday rhythm is upended as authorities assess whether cultural practices constitute danger or neglect.

In court, prosecutors argue that Datong’s design includes Sun Wukong and thus signals a worldview that tolerates violence toward his child. Datong counters that Sun Wukong carries deep cultural resonance and that his artwork should be understood in its artistic and mythic context, not equated with real-life harm. He maintains that what he does in his professional life is separate from how he raises his son. The courtroom becomes a crucible where Western and Chinese values collide, testing empathy, fair scrutiny, and the limits of interpretation.

As the case unfolds, Grandfather Xu decides to leave the United States, distressed by a world where a simple, harmless traditional treatment can be labeled as abuse, and overwhelmed by the language barrier. At the same time, Datong’s friend and lawyer, John Quinlan, works to defend the family, even trying Gua Sha himself to show the marks are only surface-level and not truly harmful. Ultimately, the family is reunited when Datong is able to return home. The film closes by underscoring a broader message about the differences between Western and Chinese culture, inviting viewers to consider how misread signs, artistic symbolism, and everyday care can clash and then converge when families seek understanding across cultures.
