The story set in 1910 Shanghai reveals the oppression of Chinese women. A poor woman supports her brother and sister‑in‑law, then is forced into a marriage with a wealthy, cruel husband and his brutal mother. After bearing a son, the husband dies, leaving only a modest inheritance. Bitter and desperate, she torments her child and turns to opium.
