Gong Li plays Sun Liying, a single mother caring for her hearing‑impaired son Zheng Da. When his hearing aid is broken in a school fight, she tries to raise 5,000 yuan for a replacement, first by running a bookstall that is raided, then by delivering newspapers and cleaning a businessman’s house. The drama screened at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival.
