Jean Latimer, Elizabeth Taylor, lives with her widowed father, defense lawyer Steve Latimer, who has recently agreed to defend gambler Victor Raimondi against charges of gambling and organized crime. Prior to the trial, her long-time boyfriend Vance Court proposes marriage, but she demurs, weighing the pull of commitment against the thrill of a dangerous liaison.

During the trial, Jean meets Victor and they immediately have undeniable chemistry on their first date. Jean confides in Victor that she is worried about her father’s alcoholism, and a tension grows as she is drawn to Victor’s charm even as she senses a darker undercurrent. Although Victor presents himself in a gentlemanly manner to Jean, she is intrigued by Victor’s dark side, the kind of complexity her life has seldom offered. Victor outbids Vance in an auction for an expensive colt, a gleaming gift he later offers to Jean, a gesture that blurs the line between affection and possession.

Steve, aware of Victor’s tricks and deceitfulness, warns Jean to see the man clearly. Yet she cannot resist the lure of Victor, and the affair intensifies. She agrees to take a short vacation with Steve to clear her head, hoping the separation might steady her judgment. But the moment they part, she finds the distance unbearable and departs for New York to see Victor, chasing the dangerous thrill that drew her to him in the first place.

In New York, a newspaper article hints that the trials against Victor may reopen after the discovery of classified information provided by a mysterious witness, later revealed to be Steve. Victor is furious, knowing that Steve has the power to expose his crimes and ruin both his reputation and his chances with Jean. The two men clash in a tense confrontation, each wary of the other’s leverage. While Steve cannot directly testify in court, he warns that he could call witnesses who would testify to Victor’s crimes, including the murder of two mobsters. Victor responds with threats of his own should Steve travel to Washington to testify. In a reckless moment, Victor strikes both Steve and Jean, leaving a stain on their fragile trust.

Despite Victor’s subsequent apology, Jean comes to see that her father was right about the gambling man’s true character and cancels the engagement. Victor departs, and as he sits at a red light in his car, a man in an adjacent truck shoots him dead. When reporters seek interviews the next day, Steve characterizes Victor as a gambler who lost his own game. In the end, Jean and Steve reconcile and embrace, choosing a cautious, hard-won peace over the dangerous allure Victor once promised.
