This makes it one of the most valuable and dangerous pieces of technology in the world, which is why the NSA guards it heavily, why Balder wants it destroyed, and why Russian mercenaries and Camilla's Spiders are willing to kill for it.

After Lisbeth steals Firefall from the NSA, Balder watches from a distance as her apartment is attacked and explodes. Seeing the explosion and losing contact with her, Balder assumes Lisbeth double-crossed him and kept the program for herself or sold it to his enemies. This误会 leads him to contact Gabriella Grane at the Swedish Secret Service for help, setting up the conflict that drives the second half of the film.

The Spiders are a violent group that Lisbeth and Plague investigate throughout the film. They are revealed to be connected to Lisbeth and Camilla's dark past, their father Alexander Zalachenko was a Soviet agent who committed atrocities, and the Spiders were originally formed as part of his legacy of violence and control. The group operates as cybercriminals and assassins, but their true purpose is revealed when Camilla is shown to be their leader, using the organization to carry out her own vendetta.

While security expert Edwin Needham attempts to shut down the system, she bypasses his defenses and copies Firefall onto her device. She leaves behind a mocking image as a signature, demonstrating both her technical superiority and her defiance. Frans Balder approaches Lisbeth because he created Firefall and now fears its destructive potential in the wrong hands. Lisbeth agrees partly for the financial reward but mainly because she understands the catastrophic danger, global nuclear codes in the hands of criminals or hostile nations could cause worldwide catastrophe. Her moral compass, despite her criminal activities, leads her to take the job seriously.
