Carter 'Doc' McCoy is unexpectedly paroled from a Texas state prison. His parole is arranged by his wife, Carol, through her relationship with the corrupt Jack Benyon, which leaves Doc feeling conflicted about their marriage.

After learning that Benyon intends for him to participate in a bank robbery, Doc reluctantly agrees to work with criminals Rudy Butler and Frank Jackson. Despite his mistrust of them, he and Carol start plotting the details of the robbery.

Doc and Carol scout the bank's layout to plan the robbery. They devise a timetable based on employee arrival times and prepare for the heist while dealing with the underlying tension between them due to Carol's betrayal.

On the day of the robbery, Rudy and Frank enter the bank to control the crowd while Doc is let in through the back. The tension escalates when a guard attempts to draw his weapon, resulting in Frank shooting him dead.

Following the robbery, Doc and Carol escape in one car while Rudy and Frank take another. But tension erupts when Rudy shoots and kills Frank, further complicating the already perilous situation.

At the meeting point, Rudy attempts to kill Doc and Carol, but Doc retaliates and shoots him. Believing Rudy is dead, Doc and Carol leave with the money, unaware that Rudy survived.

At Benyon's ranch, Doc confronts him about the setup, learning that the robbery was a cover for Benyon's business dealings. Carol unexpectedly shoots Benyon, complicating their escape further.

Doc and Carol decide to take a train to El Paso, but their plans go awry when a stranger helps Carol with the money bag, only to switch keys and steal the money. Doc chases the thief, leading to further chaos.

After Carol's new car is recognized by the police, Doc becomes aware of their imminent capture. He attacks the officers and destroys their car, showcasing his desperation to evade the law.

Doc and Carol find themselves hiding in a dumpster, which leads them to the local dump after being emptied. This experience brings them closer as they confront the fragility of their trust amidst chaos.

In El Paso, Doc discovers that Rudy was ahead of them and is in the hotel, waiting for them. The tension escalates as Doc must navigate this precarious situation carefully.

In a dramatic encounter, Doc confronts Rudy at the hotel. Following a fierce gunfight with Benyon's associates, the chaos forces Fran to flee, emphasizing the stakes while Doc fights for survival.

After defeating Rudy, Doc and Carol manage to escape by bribing a trash-collecting cowboy to drive them across the border. This marks a significant turning point as they leave their old lives behind.

With their robbery money, Doc and Carol purchase a truck in Mexico. They look forward to a new life, but the shadows of their past decisions linger as they drive further into the unknown.
