The Garden of Sinners: Overlooking View

In September 1998, Shiki Ryōgi lives alone in a barely-furbished apartment. She is visited by her close friend Mikiya Kokutō, who brings strawberry-flavored Häagen-Dazs and shares light banter. This scene establishes Shiki's isolation and the ordinary rhythm of their friendship.

Shiki discusses a string of suicides where several high school girls jump from the Fujō Building without a suicide note. The Hollow Shrine detective agency, Garan no Dou, begins its own inquiry into the mysterious deaths. The case draws in Shiki and Mikiya and sets the story's paranormal premise.

As the investigation intensifies, Mikiya Kokutō collapses and slips into a coma. Tōko Aozaki suspects his condition is related to the suicides and the unsettled forces behind them. The incident tightens the bond between Shiki, Mikiya, and the agency.

After the corpse of a fourth victim is found, Shiki witnesses nine ghostly figures hovering above the Fujō Building. This eerie vision signals that the suicides are not ordinary and belong to a supernatural pattern. She prepares to press the investigation further.

Shiki enters the abandoned Fujō Building to learn more and encounters a hostile ghostly entity. She battles it and manages to escape, though her prosthetic arm is severely damaged in the confrontation. The incident marks her first direct confrontation with the supernatural forces at play.

Shiki recuperates at Garan no Dou while her prosthetic arm is repaired by Tōko Aozaki. The delay gives the team time to analyze the paranormal signs surrounding the suicides. She readies herself for another encounter with the spirits.

Following the death of a seventh victim, Shiki returns to the Fujō Building to confront the ghostly manifestations again. She faces the hostile apparitions and gradually gains control over the situation. The fight culminates in her destruction of the spirits.

The final ghost persistently curses Shiki to commit suicide, but she remains unfazed. She destroys the final specter by stabbing it in the abdomen. This climactic encounter cements Shiki's mastery over the ghosts and ties the Fujō Building tragedies to Kirie's manipulations.

Meanwhile in the city, terminally-ill Kirie Fujo awakens in her hospital bed and confronts Tōko in person. It is revealed she has been using astral projection and possession to lure girls to the Fujō Building. The revelations reveal the motive behind the suicides.

Tōko explains that Mikiya's coma was caused by Kirie's possession after she became infatuated with him. The haunting extends beyond Shiki's encounter and ties Mikiya's fate to Kirie's loneliness. The dynamic between Shiki, Mikiya, Kirie, and Tōko becomes central.

Kirie confesses that her extreme loneliness due to her infirmity pushed her to manipulate others. She admits her intent was to have the girls notice her and then die after the destruction of her astral projection. The emotional stakes heighten as the truth about the suicides is revealed.

After the astral projection is destroyed, Kirie Fujo kills herself at the Fujō Building. Her death marks the end of the chain of suicides and reveals the human origin of the haunting. Tōko and Shiki confront the aftermath of Kirie's choices.

Mikiya wakes from his coma with only fragmented memories of the events. He returns with Shiki to her apartment, and the pair share light banter that ends with Shiki blushing. The couple's dynamic hints at a renewed relationship after the ordeal.

In the post-credits scene, Tōko walks with Azaka Kokutō near the Fujō Building and muses that Kirie probably could not fly that day. The remark serves as a poignant final note on Kirie's thwarted aspirations and the lingering mystery.
