In the early days of the 19th century, the United States stands on the brink of a grand new chapter. Fresh from the monumental acquisition of the Louisiana Territory, the young republic looks westward, eager to map uncharted rivers, mountain passes and endless plains. The film captures the restless energy of a nation poised between ambition and uncertainty, its landscapes rendered in sweeping, luminous panoramas that echo both the promise and the untamed wildness of the frontier.

Meriwether Lewis is summoned to the White House, where Thomas Jefferson entrusts him with a daring charge: to lead an expedition that will chart the newly claimed lands and push all the way to the Pacific. Recognizing the weight of the task, Lewis asks his longtime confidant William Clark to join as an equal partner. Their partnership is infused with camaraderie and subtle rivalry, a shared sense of purpose that is tested by personal ties back home, especially the affection of Julia Hancock, whose presence adds an intimate undercurrent to the otherwise public venture.

The party assembles at the edge of the Missouri River, a motley crew of soldiers, volunteers and pioneers.
