The Education of Sonny Carson

Sonny attends Li'l Boy's wake and tries to buy a bouquet from a nearby shop but cannot afford it. Driven by loyalty to his fellow Lord and the need to honor Li'l Boy's memory, he spots a white man carrying a telegram with $100 in change and robs him. The flowers represent his respect for the fallen gang member, and the robbery is his only means of acquiring them given his poverty.

At age thirteen, Sonny is arrested alongside three friends for attempting to break into a local market. While serving a three-month sentence in juvenile detention, he meets Willie, the leader of the Lords. Willie mentors him during incarceration and formally initiates him into the gang, marking Sonny's entry into organized street life.

Willie is beaten nearly to death by prison guards while Sonny watches. After the brutal beating, Willie tells Sonny he cannot endure the treatment anymore. That same night, guards forcibly drag Willie from his cell, toss him over a railing, and he falls to his death. The guards' actions appear retaliatory, eliminating Willie after he survived their earlier assault.
