The Day the Fish Came Out

On a remote Greek island called Karos, life takes a drastic turn following a mysterious military incident in 1972, which is set a few years after the actual 1966 Palomares accident involving a US Air Force B-52G bomber and a KC-135 tanker. The story is inspired by this real event, which resulted in four hydrogen bombs being accidentally dropped and temporarily lost over Spain. The film opens with a striking scene where Spanish flamenco dancers explain, through a powerful montage, why the story is set in Greece instead of Spain, setting a tone of mystique and uncertainty.

The tranquility of the island is shattered when a military aircraft in distress drops its dangerous payload—two atomic bombs and a mysterious object called Container Q. The plane, which is rapidly losing power, parachutes the deadly cargo onto the island before the crew ejects, landing only in their underwear without any communication devices or supplies. Stranded and helpless, the pilots are left to wander the bleak landscape attempting to understand their situation while desperately trying to contact their base, but their efforts are thwarted by their lack of resources and the island’s isolation.

Meanwhile, the island’s inhabitants, living simple and often desperate lives, are initially unaware of the danger sprawling around them. Some villagers, believing their prospects have improved, welcome an influx of tourists, encouraged by the local mayor. These tourists arrive in droves, attracted by offers of entertainment and escape, turning the once quiet island into a lively but chaotic destination. Unbeknownst to everyone, two military agents—disguised as resort developers— arrive secretly, tasked with locating and retrieving the dangerous cargo they suspect is hidden somewhere on the island. They begin to buy land, mingling with locals, and planning their covert operation under the guise of building a hotel.

Meanwhile, a poor goatherd and his wife stumble upon Container Q. Convinced it might contain treasures, they try to pry it open, but to no avail. They eventually steal a device that emits acid, believing it might help them find gold or valuables inside. Instead, they discover strange, unrecognizable stones. Their actions set off a chain of events that lead the agents to them. In panic, the villagers throw Container Q into the sea and the stones into a water cistern, unwittingly contaminating the island’s water supply with toxic material.

As night falls, the consequences become apparent: the waters around Karos begin to harbor dead fish, indicating environmental disaster. The military agents realize they are too late to prevent catastrophe. The pilots, who had managed to call home with the small change they begged from tourists, are rudely interrupted and chased away by the agents before they can warn others. The island’s revelers remain oblivious, dancing and partying amid the impending disaster, while a public address system pleas in vain for their attention, warning them of the danger they are unknowingly facing.

The story captures a tense and surreal atmosphere—highlighting themes of human recklessness, environmental catastrophe, and the chaos that ensues when military secrets go awry. The film’s imagery and storytelling explore the absurdity of the situation, set against the backdrop of a quiet island and the dark secrets of nuclear weapons, all culminating in a potent reminder of the thin line separating peace from catastrophe.
