The Challenge

McGuire believes that being second best is equivalent to being dead. Driven by this extreme pride, he travels to town specifically to challenge the legendary fastest gun, seeking to prove himself as the fastest gun in the West.

This ambition is introduced in the opening scene where McGuire declares his belief about second place.

When McGuire meets the fisherman, he has no idea it's Marshal Blaine. They share a friendly conversation, and only after McGuire announces his intention to duel Blaine does the Marshal reveal his identity. At that point, McGuire chooses to maintain distance, preferring to preserve their amicable rapport rather than attack an unsuspecting man.

Their pleasant conversation establishes a bond that makes the eventual tragedy more poignant.

Lisa Denton, the brothel owner, is deeply in love with Marshal Blaine and dreams of marrying him. She sees McGuire's challenge to Blaine as a threat to both Blaine's life and her future with him, so she hires Scarnes to eliminate McGuire to protect the man she loves.

Lisa's romantic feelings for Blaine are established early when she envisions marriage.

Scarnes and Blaine share a criminal past, they served time together for a bank robbery before Blaine reformed his life and became a lawman. This complicated history adds weight to Scarnes being hired for the assassination.
