When the wealthy patriarch becomes ill on his 70th birthday, three of his sons hurry back from Calcutta, sparking a reunion steeped in painful ironies and lingering disillusionment. The family—along with an addled fourth son who lives with the old man—waits, and the static occasion exposes simmering tensions: the father’s moral rectitude, the business ambition of two brothers, and the emotional withdrawal of the others.
