In early‑1900s Brooklyn, the impoverished Nolan family scrapes by on pennies while coping with Papa’s alcoholism. The film brings each character to life as they face Aunt Sissy’s scandalous marriages, the loss of the lone tree shading their tenement, and Francie’s yearning to attend a better school—if her father can pull himself together.
