The Gruber family learns their affluent American cousin, Menyhért Gruber, has arrived in Hungary with his daughter Mary. Relatives plot ways to profit, and the boldest is Bálint Koltay, who courts Mary directly. Their love deepens, and Bálint remains loyal even after Menyhért reveals bankruptcy, compelling him to provide a real noble castle for his future father‑in‑law.
