Retired Hofrat Geiger discovers a woman is his illegitimate daughter. She runs a rundown inn in financial trouble, and when he visits she turns him away. To obtain Austrian citizenship she agrees to a paper marriage, while Geiger, who handles her naturalization, delays the process to keep her nearby, and he arranges a renovation of her inn.
