In 19th‑century Bohemia, Hans, a stage‑coach driver, loves the mayor’s daughter Marie. She is betrothed to Wenzel, a wealthy farmer’s son, but she refuses him because of Hans. When Wenzel admits he loves a circus director’s daughter, the matchmaker pays Hans to step aside. Hans accepts, yet Marie, hearing of the payment, turns away from him.
