What Is The Blood Rose About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of The Blood Rose (1970) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

Frédéric Lansac is a man of refined tastes, an artist and botanist whose world revolves around beauty in its many forms. He runs an elegant beauty salon, living a life built on art and appearances. When he meets Anne at a dress ball, their connection is immediate, and what begins as a whirlwind romance soon leads to marriage — a decision that requires leaving behind his party-girl lover Moira, who is none too pleased to be cast aside.

The wedding celebration becomes a turning point no one anticipated. Moira's presence at the event sparks a confrontation that ends with Anne falling into a bonfire, leaving her face horribly scarred. The radiant woman Frédéric married now bears the marks of that terrible night, and the couple retreats from public life, confined to his secluded mansion. It's a gothic setting staffed by mute dwarf servants, where privacy curdles into something more oppressive.

Anne's once-gentle spirit grows bitter and demanding as she struggles with her new reality, and Frédéric's devotion takes on darker undertones. He tells the world she has died, while secretly keeping her hidden away and hiring a nurse to tend to her needs. Within the mansion's walls, love, vanity, and control begin to blur in unsettling ways. What begins as a husband's desire to protect his wife becomes a story of obsession — one that will test the limits of devotion and reveal how far one man might go to preserve an ideal of beauty.
