Nicholas Rood, a mine owner, finds a black doll on his desk after he killed his former partner. He is stabbed as he talks to his daughter Marian, who summons her fiancé, Nick Halstead. Nick uncovers six suspects—Laura Leland, Rex, Mallison and Walling, servant Esteban, and Dr. Giddings. Sheriff Renick muddles the clues, but Nick identifies the killer.
