The Big Man

Danny marries Beth in the mid-1980s and the couple eventually have two children. They settle in a Scottish village, building a life together while Danny works at the mine and starts a family.

Danny, a striking miner, is sentenced to six months in prison for assaulting a police officer during a protest. On his release, the village mine has closed and he is banned from mining, forcing Beth to bring in the wage and support the family.

In the local pub, Danny meets his old friend Frankie and Mason, a man linked to organized crime. Mason has Billy provoke a fight to test Danny's fighting ability, and Danny wins the bout. He is paid a large sum to participate in a forthcoming bare-knuckle fight.

Danny begins training with Frankie while Beth has taken the children to Glasgow to stay with her parents. He tries to secure steady work with a job interview, but insults the manager and returns to train. The choice between staying and fighting grows more pressing.

As Danny prepares to leave for Glasgow, most residents gather in the streets to wish him luck and see him off. The send-off underscores the community's support even as danger looms over the upcoming fight.

Danny arrives in Glasgow with his dog and begins training in a hotel with Frankie. He vows to fight with honour, but his trainer warns that the opponent will fight dirty. Meanwhile, Frankie discovers Beth with Gordon, dumps the dog in a river, and lies to Danny about the incident, and the dog finds its way back.

Danny sees Beth with Gordon in a club and becomes distraught. He leaves the club in anger, pursued by Frankie. In the heat of the moment, Danny tells Frankie that the fight is off.

The next morning, Danny shows up at the gym and is punched to the floor. Mason and Frankie take him to Mason's childhood neighborhood, where he learns the bare-knuckle bout will be fought on behalf of Cam Colvin, a drug trafficker, to put Colvin out of business.

The fight takes place in an abandoned ship-yard with the last man standing rule. Dawson fights dirty and blindingly, but Danny is forced to fight dirty as well, targeting Dawson's eyes and beating him on the concrete floor to win.

After recuperating, Dawson's brother reveals that Danny has blinded him and points toward Mason's money stash. Danny confronts Mason, who taunts him and throws money; Danny loses his temper and knocks Mason out, deciding to take all the money from the safe.

Danny and Frankie take Dawson to the hospital, where Dawson explains that Mason and Colvin are in drug trafficking and the bout was arranged so the loser would be forced to carry out an assassination.

Back in the village, Beth and the children have returned but refuse to allow Danny's blood-money into the house. Danny locates Frankie at the mine, learns Frankie has been slashed, and hands the money back to Mason, who reveals he has already visited Beth and the children.

Mason and his men confront Danny in the street, but Beth, the children, and the village crowd stand with him. Beth publicly voices the threat so everyone can hear, and Mason and his crew leave as the family is surrounded by the supportive community in a final reunion.
