In 1948, American airmen stationed far from home are flown to Germany to operate C-54s and deliver coal to West Berlin under the Soviet blockade. The White Hibiscus crew, led by Tech Sgt. Danny MacCullough, makes a critical mission from Frankfurt into Tempelhof Airport to lift coal to the city’s starving sectors. These supply runs reinforce Western presence and morale amid the blockade.

The crew is publicly honored for making the 100,000th flight into Berlin, a milestone celebrated by occupation authorities. Danny seizes the spotlight as a chance to arrange a public relations stunt and see Berlin through a different lens. The ceremony takes place in Berlin and becomes a turning point in Danny’s visit.

During the ceremony, Danny meets Frederica Burkhardt, a German war widow selected to thank the airmen. He is immediately drawn to her warmth and beauty, sparking a developing attraction. The moment sets the stage for a complicated romance amid the tense postwar environment.
