The Way to the Stars

The film opens on an abandoned airfield—the fictional RAF Station Halfpenny Field—where the shadows of war linger in the dust and the small details seen at the start will circle back as the story unfolds. Pilot Officer Peter Penrose is introduced as a very new and exceptionally inexperienced pilot, having logged only about 15 hours in Bristol Blenheims. He is posted in the summer of 1940 to No. 720 Squadron, RAF, an operational bomber unit stationed at this newly established airfield, and he serves in B Flight under Flight Lieutenant David Archdale.

When No. 720 Squadron’s commanding officer, Squadron Leader Carter, is shot down, Archdale steps into command and steadies the men through the growing strain of combat. As Penrose learns the ropes, he begins to mature into a skilled and reliable pilot, developing a confidence that had seemed distant at the outset. Alongside his training and duties, he encounters Iris Winterton Renée Asherson, a young woman who lives with her stern aunt in the nearby town and becomes a focal point of Penrose’s thoughts and choices. Their meetings at the Golden Lion Hotel add a personal dimension to a life lived in constant peril between missions.

Meanwhile, Archdale’s personal life takes a turn when he marries Miss Todd Rosamund John, known to everyone as Toddy, the popular manager of the hotel who becomes a central figure in the social circle surrounding Halfpenny Field. The couple later has a son, Peter, whose birth anchors the family narrative amid the upheavals of war.

By May 1942, the squadron has moved on to flying Douglas Boston bombers, signaling a shift in the air war’s tempo. Penrose shows signs of strain after extended combat, and Archdale, recognizing the pressure, has him posted to controller school. Yet Archdale himself is shot down and killed over France on a mission, a blow that weighs heavily on Penrose and tempers his resolve to protect Iris from similar heartbreak. In the aftermath, Penrose steps back from courting Iris, trying to shield her from the risks that could threaten their future.

The squadron’s reach expands beyond Britain as No. 720 is sent to the Middle East, while Penrose remains behind as a ground controller for a United States Army Air Forces B-17 Flying Fortress group that takes over the Halfpenny Field airfield. There, he befriends USAAF Captain Johnny Hollis Douglass Montgomery and Lieutenant Joe Friselli Bonar Colleano, forming bonds across the Allied lines as they confront the daunting challenges of aerial warfare together. The Americans participate in the first major USAAF attack on Occupied France on 17 August 1942, a moment that underscored the difficulties and risks faced by air crews in every mission.

As the war progresses, Penrose rises to the rank of squadron leader and becomes a Pathfinder pilot, bringing a seasoned perspective to missions that require precise navigation and timing. He makes an emergency landing at Halfpenny Field, the very airfield where his journey began, and there he reconnects with Iris, who has decided to take a more active role in the war by joining up. Toddy—still a steady presence—urges Penrose to propose to Iris, arguing that life should be lived boldly even in the shadow of loss. The bond between the airmen grows deeper, even as danger remains a constant companion; Captain Hollis remains a steadfast friend, though tragedy strikes when he dies trying to land his battle-damaged B-17 with a bomb hung aboard, rather than risk crashing into a village or town.

In the final scenes, the Allied airmen depart the Golden Lion Hotel and return to their duties, watched over by Toddy. The film closes with a quiet, reflective note as David Archdale’s voice recites the poem “For Johnny,” a tribute that frames the entire story as a testament to friendship, courage, and the personal costs of war.
