What Happens in Tekken: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Tekken (2010) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

After the devastation of World War III, often referred to as the Terror Wars, the landscape of global governance dramatically changed as governments crumbled and megacorporations rose to power. In this new world, eight corporations emerged as the victors, carving up territories for themselves, while North America fell under the dominion of the formidable Tekken Corporation. To assert their dominance and quell unrest, these corporations instituted an annual combat tournament known as the "Iron Fist," a brutal competition where representatives fight until only one remains. The victor earns not only personal fame and wealth but also brings global prestige to their corporation.

By the year 2039, a young man named Jin Kazama, portrayed by Jonathan Patrick Foo, navigates the grim reality of living in a slum area known as the Anvil alongside his mother, Jun, played by Tamlyn Tomita. Jun dedicates herself to raising and training Jin while carefully guarding the secret of his father's identity, insisting that he is dead. A spirited and rebellious soul, Jin resorts to running contraband for resistance factions opposing the oppressive Tekken Corporation, much to Jun's discontent. He dreams of entering the Iron Fist tournament, believing it will secure a better future for them, but Jun vehemently objects, arguing that the tournament symbolizes the very forces that instigated the Terror Wars.

Tragedy strikes one fateful night when Jin is ambushed by a ruthless group called the Jackhammers, the enforcers of Tekken City, resulting in Jun's death. Heartbroken and filled with rage, Jin vows to avenge his mother by targeting Heihachi Mishima, the chairman of the Tekken Corporation. Within the wreckage of his home, Jin discovers a Tekken Fighter I.D. that belonged to Jun, unveiling her past as a competitor in the Iron Fist tournament. Jin's prowess earns him a wild card entry into Iron Fist after he defeats the notorious Marschall Law, portrayed by Cung Le, leading him to Tekken City under the sponsorship of the washed-up boxer, Steve Fox, played by Luke Goss.

Upon his arrival in Tekken City, Jin forms a bond with the skilled mixed martial artist Christie Monteiro, portrayed by Kelly Overton. As he punches his way through matches, he nearly kills his opponent, Miguel Caballero Rojo, in a moment of uncontrollable fury, showcasing the depths of his turmoil. Impressed by his violent determination, Kazuya Mishima, Heihachi's son, offers Jin a position within the corporation, which Jin adamantly refuses. Later that evening, Jin finds himself the target of an assassination attempt orchestrated by Nina and Anna Williams, but is saved by Christie's timely intervention. In a moment of determination, Jin pledges to win Iron Fist and exact vengeance on both Heihachi and Kazuya. After revealing to Steve the connection to his mother, he realizes the weight of his lineage.

As the tournament progresses, Christie triumphs over Nina, but chaos reigns when Kazuya imprisons Heihachi, usurping control of Tekken. Jin survives a fierce battle against the elite fighter Yoshimitsu, showcasing his growing capabilities. In an attempted escape alongside Christie, Steve, and Raven, Jin finds himself embroiled in a violent confrontation that leaves his allies at risk. When tensions peak, and his mother’s history reveals his father’s dark past, Jin learns shocking truths, including that Kazuya is his biological father, heightening his quest for revenge.

After enduring heavy losses, including Steve’s bravery leading to his untimely demise, the true stakes of the Iron Fist tournament become apparent as Kazuya alters the rules to mandate fights to the death. In the climactic finals, Jin faces off against Bryan Fury, played by Gary Daniels, who has already claimed the lives of others, while Kazuya holds Christie hostage. In a battle of skill and ferocity, despite being initially overmatched, Jin channels his mother's teachings and defeats Bryan, causing a stir among the audience both in the arena and back in the Anvil.

In a fit of rage, Kazuya enters the fray armed and ready but, thanks to Christie's strategic distraction, Jin manages to pin Kazuya down. Refusing to take his father’s life, Jin walks away, symbolizing not only his victory but a dramatic shift in the power dynamics within Tekken Corporation. As he exits the gates of Tekken City, Jin receives a salute from the Jackhammers, marking his ascension as the new CEO of the corporation. He returns to the Anvil to a heroes' welcome, with hopes of upholding his mother’s legacy. Additionally, in a teaser during the post-credits, it’s revealed that Heihachi somehow survived his execution amid the tumultuous power struggle within the city.
