The film opens with a narration and a street-level view of Calcutta as Nanda feels she is being followed. Dev Dutt Anand sits beside her on a bus and follows her to her boarding house. The owners reassure Nanda that Dev is their new lodger, easing the初 tension.

Within a few days, Dev and Nanda become good friends, and Nanda falls for Dev. He flirts with her in a affectionate, lighthearted way and they enjoy a day trip together into the countryside, cementing their bond.

Dev starts working at Merry Musical Stores, where his lateness earns a scolding from his boss, I. S. Johar. Later, Johar discovers a poem Dev wrote, is impressed by his talent, and hopes Dev’s work will be published and bring the store some prestige.

One evening, Dev splashes Kalpana with water after a car passes by. He teases her, but soon helps start her car and ends up driving her home, turning a misfortune into an awkward but charming connection.

During the ride, Kalpana notices Dev’s notebook of poems sticking out of his coat pocket. This glimpse of his writing fascinates her and deepens her interest in the simple, candid young man.

I. S. Johar sends out Dev’s book of poems to clients, and the wealthy socialite Simi Garewal is instantly taken with them. Dev visits Simi to deliver a tuned piano and admits, openly, that he is the poet behind the poems.

Kalpana reappears as the unknown coat-owner, revealed to be a famous actress. She takes Dev along for a countryside shoot, and a car mishap leads them to spend a day together, getting to know local people and each other.

Simi arranges a party to boost Dev’s career, and he becomes an instant social success. Nanda helps him upstairs to his boarding house, and she scolds him for his drunkenness the previous night.

After the party, Dev apologizes for his behavior and accompanies Nanda to a countryside spot where she proposes to him. Dev asks for a few days to think and asks her to wait for the right time to commit.

Simi convinces Dev to participate in a Mushaira at Srinagar that will be broadcast on All India Radio. Dev delivers a flawless performance, boosting his reputation and securing further public interest in his poetry and music.

After the Mushaira, Dev and Simi share a Dal Lake shikara ride where she asks him to visit Gulmarg. The invitation sets up a crucial moment in Dev’s negotiations between romance and career.

In Gulmarg, Simi proposes to Dev and asks for a decision soon. Dev asks for 4 to 7 days to answer, highlighting the tension between ambition, affection, and social expectations.

Back in Srinagar, Kalpana confesses to a sense of loneliness behind her glamorous life. Dev recognizes the emptiness behind the superficial world around her and begins to question his choices.

Dev consults a hypnotist to imagine three potential futures—marrying Kalpana, Simi, or Nanda. This sequence, the film’s only color moment in the black-and-white era, shows vivid, conflicting paths and ends with a troubling sense of undecided longing.

Waking from hypnosis, Dev resolves not to lose Nanda and declares his intention to pursue her. The film closes on his decision to make Nanda his life partner, choosing love over the competing romances.
