Jock Mahoney as Tarzan, of Africa, is summoned to an unnamed Asian country to protect Kashi (Ricky Der), the youthful heir to the throne, from his evil uncle, Woody Strode as Khan. Arriving by parachute from a light airplane and armed with a Spanish bolo hunting knife, Tarzan dons monk’s robes and travels by boat to a monastery.
The first set of three challenges tests Tarzan’s worthiness to enter Kashi’s service: a precise archery contest to prove steadiness and accuracy; a brutal strength test where Tarzan must hold onto two rope-attached handles as buffalo are driven apart, lifting him between two tall posts; and a final wisdom question designed to probe his judgment. The monastery then turns its attention to the young ruler, Kashi, who must pass his own three tests: first, selecting the correct diamond out of three; second, choosing an empty goblet out of three; and last, identifying one urn of ashes from five. Having passed these trials, Khan steps forward and demands a fourth test of three life-or-death challenges, a ritual long dormant, called The Challenge Of Might. The boy designates Tarzan as his defender, and Tarzan accepts the responsibility.
Tarzan and Khan clash across two events of the fourth test, building toward a dramatic final confrontation: a sword duel fought on a wide mesh net suspended above large vats of boiling oil, where Khan meets a fatal end by plunging through the net and into the cauldron below.

Tarzan is called to the unnamed Asian country because the dying spiritual leader cannot protect the young heir Kashi from his evil uncle Khan, who schemes to seize the throne. Tarzan's reputation as a skilled protector and warrior makes him the ideal guardian for the boy.
The setup establishes early that this is a political struggle between royal family members, not a jungle adventure.
Khan is the brother of the dying spiritual leader and schemes to claim the throne for himself rather than allow the young heir Kashi to succeed. By eliminating Kashi, Khan would become the rightful ruler of the kingdom.
Khan's treachery is revealed when he demands a fourth test after Kashi passes his trials, showing he will not accept a normal succession.
The Challenge Of Might is a long-dormant ritual of three life-or-death combat events that can be invoked when a new ruler is selected. Khan revives this dangerous test to eliminate both Kashi and his chosen defender Tarzan through organized combat rather than direct assassination.
The term 'long dormant' signals this is an extreme measure not used in normal succession, making Khan's invocation a deliberate escalation.
After passing the initial three trials to prove his worthiness, Tarzan becomes bound by honor to protect Kashi. When Kashi designates him as his defender in The Challenge Of Might, Tarzan accepts the responsibility, viewing it as his duty to ensure the rightful heir survives.
Tarzan passes the wisdom test early, showing he understands duty and judgment.
Khan invokes the fourth test because Kashi has successfully completed the traditional succession trials, which normally would secure his position as ruler. By demanding The Challenge Of Might, Khan creates a legal framework to kill Kashi and his defender through sanctioned combat without openly breaking royal law.
Khan's demand for a fourth test immediately after Kashi succeeds reveals his refusal to accept normal succession.
Tarzan is suspended between two tall posts by gripping rope handles attached to buffalo that are driven apart. He must hold onto both handles despite being lifted and stretched painfully. He passes through sheer willpower and physical endurance, refusing to release either grip.
This test establishes Tarzan's incredible strength and determination, foreshadowing his ability to survive The Challenge Of Might.
The final event of The Challenge Of Might takes place on a wide mesh net suspended above vats of boiling oil. During the sword duel, Khan loses his footing and falls through the net into the boiling oil below, resulting in his fatal end.
The danger of the net arena is established when the setting is introduced, with the boiling oil creating obvious fatal stakes.
The archery contest tests Tarzan's steadiness and accuracy, skills essential for protecting the young heir in a royal setting where ranged combat and precision matter. This trial establishes Tarzan as a capable warrior beyond his jungle abilities.
Successful completion of each test builds toward Tarzan's qualification to face Khan directly.
Kashi must identify the correct urn containing the ashes of the deceased previous leader from five options. This grim test probes his willingness to accept the legacy and burdens of leadership, proving he can face difficult decisions necessary for ruling.
This test emphasizes the weight of leadership that Kashi must be prepared to bear.
The movie features three distinct phases of testing: Tarzan's three trials to prove worthiness as a protector, Kashi's three trials to prove worthiness as a ruler, and finally The Challenge Of Might as Khan's deadly fourth test. This structure creates escalating stakes and validates both the defender and the heir before the final confrontation.
The repeated three-challenge pattern builds toward the fourth test that Khan introduces.
